Hypothermia and hyperthermia victims
Hypothermia: When someone has become extremely cold for an extended period of time. This happens when the body's temperature reaches below 35°C and stays this way.
Hyperthermia: When someone has over heated for an extended period of time. This happens when the body's temperature reaches above 40°C and stays this way.
Hyperthermia: When someone has over heated for an extended period of time. This happens when the body's temperature reaches above 40°C and stays this way.
Hypothermia Symptoms: Difficulty with speaking, nausea, unable to use hands and feet, cellular metabolic movement begins to shut down, blue and puffy skin, displays irrational and unusual behaviour, shorter sharper breaths, heart rate significantly increases, and in major cases organ failure can occur.
Hyperthermia Symptoms: Dry skin, nausea, sweating, vomiting, extreme headaches, fainting, dizziness, confusion, heart rate increase, irrational and unusual behaviour, pale skin and face, and eventually unconsciousness and organ failure. |
What to do with a:
Hypothermia Patient;
1.) Call for help (000)
2.) Rewarm the patient to the normal body temperature then keep them there, body heat is one off the best ways
3.) Keep them drinking water, preferably warm water, but no cold water
4.) If the patient is unconscious than the DRS.ABCD steps should be followed until they have regained consciousness
5.) If necessary CPR will be completed, this will also help to warm them
Hyperthermia Patient;
1.) Call for help (000)
2.) Cool the patient down with water or removing clothing to allow air flow
3.) Hydration, if there is cold water available then this would help significantly
4.) If the patient is unconscious than the DRS.ABCD steps should be followed until they have regained consciousness
5.) If necessary CPR will be completed
