DRS.AbcdThe acronym DRS.ABCD is used to help victims of all injuries and sicknesses.
Danger is the most important part to the seven steps. You (the person accomplishing the save) is the most important person in this exercise because if something were to happen to you than there would now be two victims. If there is no Response than you know that the patient is unconscious and unable to do anything. Once this has happened there needs to be a Send for Help. If the Airways of the victim are blocked than they cannot breathe and need to be placed into the recovery position so the blockage can fall out easily. If the victim is still not Breathing on their own then the Compressions need to start immediately. The compression rate is about 100 compressions per minute (just faster than a second per compression). The cycle is 30 compressions to 2 breaths. If the victim is an infant than there is only 2 fingers being used. The De-fibrillation machine is made to shock the heart with electricity to try and make it start beating again. |
D = Danger - look out to see if there is danger for you, others, then check for potential danger for the victim
R = Response - are they responding, check for hearing, feeling (squeeze their hand), and site (can they see you?) S = Send for Help - send some one to go and get help, or call 000 A = Airways - is there anything blocking their airways, (place the victim into the recovery position and retrieve the blockage) B = Breathing - is the victim breathing? Check for rising and falling of the chest, and feel for air exiting their mouth/nose C = Compression - if there is no breathing then start CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) D = De-fibrillation - only if there are emergency services or someone qualified to use a defibrillator would this occur |
